Curtis or Graduation?

The upcoming chart face-off between Kanye West and 50 Cent, both scheduling their album releases for Sept. 11, keeps getting better and better. In the latest news, 50 Cent has put his own career on the line, saying that he will retire from making music if Kanye sells more records than him his first week. According to the New York Daily News, 50 Cent said "Let's raise the stakes. If Kanye West sells more than 50 Cent, I'll no longer [perform] music. I'll write music and work with my other artists, but I won't put out any more solo albums."

Despite 50's usual confidence, Kanye West has opted for a slice of humble pie. "When my album and 50's album drops, you're gonna get a lot of good music at the same time," he told MTV.

It all started a few weeks ago, during an interview with Hot 97's Funkmaster Flex, when 50 Cent was asked about his Curtis album being released on the same day as Kanye's Graduation. “I hope they see and understand what’s getting ready to happen. I’m not moving, I’m coming September 11, and if Kanye come that day, then he come that day. I mean that would be great if he actually stayed in that date. I think his people are smart, and I think he’s smart too, and I think they’ll move. But I’m coming September 11." Assuming that Jay-Z, the current president of Def Jam, would move his Roc-A-Fella signee Kanye's album Graduation so that it would not collide with Curtis, the upcoming album from 50 Cent, 50 went on to put Jay-Z's name into the mix. "Jay’s not gonna let that happen anyways," he added.

But Jigga addressed the impending rivalry between the two during an interview with Hot 97's Angie Martinez. "I think it's great. I think it's a fantastic day for hip-hop. I remember having those dates [facing against] OutKast a couple of times. I actually had one with G-Unit. It's great. I know they're loving it. You're driving people to the store."

Since the back and forth quotes, speculation has been swirling about whether either man would back down and switch up his release date. During a recent performance in New York City, West declared he had no intentions of backing down. But inside sources have revealed that 50 had actually considered pushing his album back a couple of weeks so as not to coincide with Kanye's release.

Still, Kanye has continued to be "modest." "I'd rather come out on day like that, up against 50--where people are excited about going to the stores and it's an event and people talk about it--and be #2 on that day, rather than come out and be #1 on a day nobody cares about," he told MTV.

Last week, 50 Cent reportedly threw a tantrum at his G-Unit offices, ripping a TV screen off the wall. Apparently, the rapper was unhappy with the way his record label Interscope was handling his album.
