Houston rapper Chad "Pimp C" Butler of UGK died of an apparent lethal mix of prescription cough medicine and a sleeping disorder, says the Los Angeles County Coroner's office.
The drugs Promethazine and codeine are often mixed together with Jolly Rancher candy and alcohol to create "sizzurp" or "lean," a habit associated with Houston's "chopped and screwed" movement. According to assistant chief coroner, Butler did not overdose, but a sleeping disorder called sleep apnea likely also played a role in his death. Sleep apnea occurs when a sleeper actually stops breathing in short spurts. Symptoms often include snoring and tiredness during the day, and the condition is often present with obesity.
Butler, 33, was found dead in a Los Angeles hotel room in December after a concert at the nearby House of Blues.
His death will be ruled accidental, but "sizzurp" also played a role in the deaths of Houston legends Big Moe and DJ Screw.
